Interesting Places in East Iceland



Seydisfjordur

Seydisfjordur is a well known village in the east of Iceland. The village is a scenic 27 km drive from Egilsstaðir. Seyðisfjörður is surrounded by mountains on three sides and there are many waterfalls around the town. It is also well-known for its old wooden buildings.

Every week the car ferry MV Norröna of Smyril Line comes to Seyðisfjörður from Hanstholm in Denmark and Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands.

Hallormsstadir

The forest area at Hallormsstadir is situated near Lagarljot and is the largest forest in Iceland with over 50 different species of trees. The area is a popular hiking area and paths have been laid through it.

Lagarfljot

Lagarfljot is situated in the east of Iceland near Egilsstaðir. Its surface is measuring 53 km² and it is 25 km long, its greatest width is 2.5 km and its greatest depth 112 m. The river Lagarfljót flows through this lake.

The waterfall, Hengifoss 118m, is one of the highest waterfalls in the country is situated near the lake.

A monster (called Lagarfljotsormurinn by locals) is believed by some to be living in the depths of the lake Lagarfljót.
